Using Hypothesis with Canvas Course Import or Blueprint Courses

Depending on how an assignment was configured, Hypothesis readings in a Canvas course that has been imported or copied from a previous term or a Blueprint course may need additional attention before they work properly in the new course.

If the Hypothesis reading…

  • does not use a document stored in Canvas Files and
  • the reading has not been configured to use Canvas Groups

…then you do not have to do anything else for the reading to work in the new course.

However, if you are using Canvas Files or Groups for any Hypothesis readings you may need to take addition steps before the assignment works in the new course.

Will Canvas course import or Blueprint course work with Hypothesis-enabled readings?

  • Does this Hypothesis Assignment or Module Item use Canvas Groups?
    • YES — Do students have access to the People tool in the new course? (See below for further info.)
      • YES — The instructor needs create Canvas Group Sets in the new course that have names identical to the Group Sets in the original course. They must then launch one of their Hypothesis readings that uses our integration with Canvas Groups, and then all of the readings using the Groups integration will work correctly for students.
      • NO — The instructor needs create Canvas Group Sets in the new course that have names identical to the Group Sets in the original course. They must then launch all of their Hypothesis readings that use our integration and Canvas Groups. Only instructor-launched readings using our Groups integration will work for students.
    • NO — The reading will work in the new course without any extra steps.
  • Does this Hypothesis Assignment or Module Item use a PDF stored in Canvas Files?
    • YES — Do students have access to the Files tool in the new course? (See below for further info.)
      • YES — The instructor needs to launch one of their Hypothesis readings that uses our integration with Canvas Files, and then all of the readings using the Files integration will work correctly for students.
      • NO — The instructor needs to launch all of their Hypothesis readings that use our integration with Canvas Files, and then all of the readings using the Files integration will work correctly for students.

Additional details

If your imported Hypothesis assignment uses a PDF stored in Canvas Files and/or uses a Canvas Group Set to create Hypothesis reading groups then it is important to know whether students have access to the Files and People tools in your course.

If students do have access to the Files and People tools then your Hypothesis readings that use our integrations with Files and Group Sets will work for students after the instructor launches a single assignment using those integrations in the new course.

However, if students do not have access to the Files and People tools, each Hypothesis reading using the Files and/or Group Sets integrations must be first launched by an  instructor in the new course before students can access that assignment.

The Files and People tools can be found in the left navigation menu. An eye icon with a line through it shown next to the tool listing indicates that the tool is hidden from students. If you do not see any eye icon next to these tools then this indicates that students are able to access the tools. As an example, in the following image the Files tool has been hidden.

If you continue to encounter issues or error messages related to Canvas files access, please see Fixing a Broken Canvas File Link for additional troubleshooting.
