Jeremy is a scholar-educator with fifteen years of experience teaching at both the college and high school levels. He received a Ph.D. in English from the University of Texas at Austin where he worked as a Project Leader in the Digital Writing and Research Lab for four years developing units and lesson plans around a variety of digital tools. He also worked as a Program Coordinator at the University of Texas Humanities Institute, overseeing their education initiatives.

Christie’s journey in education began in 2009 as a high school history teacher. Following her time in K-12 education, she spent many years as an instructional designer in higher ed, hosting workshops and training faculty in pedagogy and educational technologies. Starting in the dusty, basement Athena clusters at MIT Libraries in the mid 1990s, Matt has spent over 20 years supporting, administrating, and integrating technology in higher education. He is an advocate for accessibility, open standards, cephalopods, and rogue taxidermy.
Joe joined Hypothesis in August 2022. He comes to the organization with over 15 years in the education industry, starting in enrollment management and fundraising, and then moving to the vendor side. Working with products and services that provide students around the world with equal opportunities in the education space, Joe discovered his passion for EdTech. He spent the last four and a half years at Labster, a market leader in science education courseware; in his time there, he grew the sales team from four people to over 100, and built go-to-market teams to support US higher ed, K12, and international higher ed. In addition to his work, Joe is passionate about travel, his rescue dogs and his family. A graduate of Suffolk University, Joe lives with his partner and two dogs outside of Boston, MA.

Remi Kalir
Inaugural Scholar in Residence
Remi Kalir is an Assistant Professor of Learning Design and Technology at the University of Colorado Denver School of Education and Human Development. He researches how social annotation facilitates collaborative, open, and equitable learning. During the 2020-21 academic year, Kalir served as our inaugural Scholar in Residence and helped lead a new research initiative related to social annotation and student learning. Kalir is lead author of a volume in The MIT Press Essential Knowledge Series. He is also co-founder and facilitator of the Marginal Syllabus, a research-practice partnership that sparks and sustains conversation about educational equity through social annotation. Kalir earned his PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Dan is a coder and entrepreneur that created the first online travel reservation company on the web (ITN/GetThere) in 1995. He wrote much of the software, launched the business and guided the long term technical and product vision. GetThere went public in 1999 and was sold to Sabre in 2000 with nearly 600 employees while processing approximately 50% of travel transacted online. Dawa is a keen advocate of user-centered design and research. In the early days of the web, she was a designer, developer and key contributor to a radio show promoting open source. Private: Peter Brantley
Director of Scholarly Communication
Previously, Peter was the Director of the BookServer Project at the Internet Archive, where he developed new business models in distributing digital books, and fostered the publication, distribution, and access to digital content based on open formats and standards.
Peter has thought deeply about one of the essential components for broad annotation of the world's knowledge: open peer review. His 2012 report for a Andrew W. Mellon-funded study on the requirements for implementing open, online peer-to-peer review reads very close to a system functional specification.
He is also the convener of the Books in Browsers conference, a summit for software developers and UX designers creating new forms of storytelling. He is a contributing editor to Publishers Weekly, and previously served on the board of the International Digital Publishing Forum, the standards-setting body for digital books.

Marguerite Avery comes to Hypothes.is with over a decade of experience in scholarly publishing. As senior acquisitions editor at MIT Press, she was responsible for the publication of over one hundred books in Information Science, Communications, and Science & Technology Studies, and developed prominent series in Infrastructure and Internet Studies. A tireless advocate for Open Access, digital scholarship, and new formats for the dissemination of research and scholarship, she holds advisory positions with the Open Library of Humanities, the Digital Public Library of America, Anvil Academic Press, and Pacific University Press. A past fellow at Harvard University’s Berkman Center and metaLab, she is currently a research affiliate in the Program of Information Science at MIT Libraries and a trustee of the Somerville Public Library.

Christof first worked on text annotations at the eBook reading app Readmill. After a detour of working on a music video platform, he ended up back at working with the idea of annotating text at Hypothesis, as a back end developer. When all the digital technology surrounding us become too much, he likes to spend his time in an analogue photography darkroom.

Lena comes from a background of Journalism and Human Rights. She studied the emergence of Open Source communities in Latin America, and later worked as a PM for cooperatives and non-profits. She co-founded SulaBatsú, a social research coop in Costa Rica. Lena was part of the team that brought Twitter to 35+ supported languages. She joined Hypothesis in 2015.

Gerben is interested in intelligence and society, and especially in how to augment the former to benefit the latter. His current primary mission is to increase people's collective intelligence by improving communication on the web, with the aid of a little machine intelligence. Andrew leads the Hypothesis design and development team. Since 1998, he has worked as a web developer for a variety of startups, non-profits, and universities and more recently as a manager at Apple and Disney. Just before starting with Hypothesis, Andrew taught a coding bootcamp course and worked as a technical lead for a cloud storage startup. Prior to becoming a professional technologist, he worked in higher education administration and earned a Masters of Education in counseling and human development from the University of Maryland, College Park. Andrew is a committed ally to and advocate for diversity and inclusion in tech and has served as a mentor for several junior developers. He lives in beautiful Portland, Oregon, where his family has lived continuously since arriving by wagon train in 1844.

Randall builds software and community through open-source projects. Previously a developer at Meebo, his experience with scalable data storage and messaging systems informs the architectural directions of the Hypothesis platform. Together with Max Ogden, he co-authored a 2-1-1 directory system that was recognized by the White House Champions of Change program on technology and innovation. He believes the responsible application of technology can help create healthy, participatory societies.

Director of Biosciences and Scholarly Communications
Maryann was most recently at UCSD, where she led the Neuroscience Information Framework (NIF), a national project to establish a uniform resource description framework for neuroscience, and the NIDDK Information Network (dknet), a portal for connecting researchers in digestive, kidney and metabolic disease to data, tools, and materials. She served as a Co-Investigator on the Monarch Initiative, a knowledge base for linking model systems to human disease. She is Editor-in-Chief of Brain and Behavior, and a Senior Editor at two new journals, Collabra and Nature Scientific Data. Dr. Martone is President of FORCE11, an organization dedicated to advancing scholarly communication and e-scholarship. Maryann Martone received her BA from Wellesley College in Biological Psychology and Ancient Greek and her Ph. D. in Neuroscience from the University of California, San Diego. She spent over 30 years at UCSD and is currently on leave from her position as Professor of Neuroscience. She started her career as a neuroanatomist, specializing in light and electron microscopy, but her main research for the past 15 years focused on informatics for neuroscience, i.e., neuroinformatics.

She speaks multiple languages, the most entertaining of which are Russian and Italian. Heather was previously a Director for the ProQuest Global Content Alliance team where she managed content licensing for Discovery and Course Materials initiatives. Prior to this, she was Vice President for Publisher and Content Strategy for SIPX (formerly the Stanford Intellectual Property Exchange). Her other roles include Global eProduct Manager and Senior Manager eOperations at Springer SBM (now Springer Nature). She began her publishing career as a book acquisitions editor for Greenwood Publishing Group/Praeger Publishers, where she was eventually Editorial Director for Praeger Security International. She is a frequent speaker and participant in industry events, recently serving Co-Chair of the Society for Scholarly Publishing’s Education Committee and Chair of the ALA ALCTS CRS Education, Research, and Publications Coordinating Committee. She is part of NISO’s Transfer Standing Committee and the STM Association’s Futurelab and Standards and Technology Executive Committee (STEC). She joined the COUNTER Board of Directors in August 2016. She earned a Ph.D. in military and diplomatic history from Yale University.

Developer
David is a developer who has spent most of his career trying to leave the web a little better than he found it. Before joining Hypothesis, David worked at FutureLearn, where he helped people to learn new things online, and the Government Digital Service, where he helped to build and launch GOV.UK. When he isn’t sat in front of a computer or scribbling on a whiteboard, he can be found training martial arts, or occasionally squinting down the viewfinder of a camera.

Director, Integrations
Jon Udell is an author, information architect, software developer, and new media innovator. His 1999 book, Practical Internet Groupware, helped lay the foundation for what we now call social software. Udell was formerly a software developer at Lotus, BYTE Magazine's executive editor and Web maven, and an independent consultant.
A hands-on thinker, Udell's analysis of industry trends has always been informed by his own ongoing experiments with software, information architecture, and new media.
From 2002 to 2006 he was InfoWorld's lead analyst, author of the weekly Strategic Developer column, and blogger-in-chief. During his InfoWorld tenure he also pioneered the medium now known as screencasting and produced an audio show, Interviews with Innovators.
From 2007 to 2014 Udell worked for Microsoft as a writer, interviewer, speaker, and experimental software developer. He created the Elm City calendar network, a service based on open standards that runs in the Windows Azure cloud, and worked on Thali, a P2P technology that enables people to control their online identities and share their data securely.
In 2015 he joined Hypothesis to help build an open annotation layer for the web.

Most recently, she worked at Spotify, on observability dashboards and internal tools. In her spare time she enjoys cooking, crafting and contributing to causes that benefit rescue animals.

Arti Walker-Peddakotla is a former product manager, scientist, and US Army veteran, and currently serves as a part-time local elected official. After serving in the US Army, and getting her M.S. in Microbiology, Arti leveraged her experience solving complex scientific problems to pursue a career in technology, where she has worked as a product manager in both VC backed and privately held startups, working to guide product strategy and development.

Alice has a background in particle physics. She has previously worked in academia as a researcher, and in the financial industry as a quantitative analyst. As a software developer, she has worked as a web developer writing tools to improve people's finances and automating deployment services. She enjoys being part of projects that have a positive impact on people, and working with a variety of technologies. In her free time she is an amateur musician and producer, LGBTQ rights activist, and loves discovering alternative and independent art.

Benjamin hates computers. There is so much promise but some frustrating failings. Twenty-five years after the start of the Web there remains no standard for commenting, and collaborative authoring platforms tightly integrate their own solutions or leave them out altogether. He joined Hypothesis to bring ideas about these issues into broader developer consciousness.

Dan is a coder and entrepreneur that created the first online travel reservation company on the web (ITN/GetThere) in 1995. He wrote much of the software, launched the business and guided the long term technical and product vision. GetThere went public in 1999 and was sold to Sabre in 2000 with nearly 600 employees while processing approximately 50% of travel transacted online. Dan currently serves as a director of Sauce Labs, the leading open source functional testing company and Getaround, a peer-to-peer car sharing company. He is a Shuttleworth Fellow.
